Crash Day on Pole Day – Trackside at Indy 2012

Indianapolis has been blessed with beautiful sunshine since the track opened for practice a week ago, a rare May when not one minute was lost to rain. Drivers ran and ran. There was only one spin, by rookie Josef Newgarden, and his Honda-powered Dallara sustained minor damage.

The conditions were sunny and hot for Saturday’s Pole Day, but on the most famous 2.5-miles of asphalt-paved brick in the world, veterans Ed Carpenter and Oriol Servia and rookie Bryan Clauson crashed hard during their qualifying attempts. They were unhurt, but their Dallaras needed major rebuilding jobs before Sunday’s second and final qualifying session.

There are technical reasons for the crashes, but it also illustrates that even with the minimum of 33 cars expected to make qualifying attempts, the desire to start as close to the front as possible pushes the drivers and cars to their limit. In the cases of Carpenter, Servia and Clauson, they went beyond their limit.

Oriol Servia.

IndyCar gave the new turbocharged 2.2-liter engines 40 to 50 more horsepower for Fast Friday practice and qualifying to boost up the speed when the cars run by themselves for four laps. The DW12 runs fast in the draft and Marco Andretti showed how fast on Friday with a lap at 227.540 mph. And there were 1,206 laps run without an incident.

The Penske and Andretti teams trimmed out their cars aerodynamically to the optimum level that allowed them to maintain balance for four laps. Chevrolet got it right, too, clearly stronger than rival Honda. And with front line drivers, the Penske and Andretti teams took the top six spots in qualifying. Penske’s Ryan Briscoe put it on the pole at 226.484 mph and Andretti teammates James Hinchcliffe and Ryan Hunter-Reay were both over 226 mph.

Ed Carpenter.

That’s moving pretty well on your own with an estimated 610 horsepower. The DW12 may create a big draft, but it can get through the air on its own, too. The clean running of practice may have had some believing the cars are easy to drive and the crashes should convince the doubters that they aren’t. The DW12 may look different with the body piece protecting the rear wheels, but they’re built with a new safety enhancement.

Carpenter has driving in eight Indy 500s and finished fifth in 2008. He’s taken on the dual role of owner, but has hired the respected Derrick Walker to run his team. Carpenter doesn’t have a teammate or share information with another team and that’s an informational challenge. He’s the only driver in that position. Carpenter put in a qualification run at 220.377 mph that was too slow to make the top 24 on Pole Day and crashed on his second attempt.

“This car has been really inconsistent today,” he said. “It was slow and inconsistent in my first qualifying run. It was loose and sliding around. We made some changes and it was pushing in the practice before the second qualifying attempt. Then the thing got loose again, so I really don’t know where we are on our setups. We have had difficulty figuring out this new car.

“It’s a strange car to get just right. I was trying to qualify for the Indy 500, so I wasn’t going to lift. I’ll do the same thing tomorrow to make this race. If I crash another car, then I crash another car. It’s just very frustrating for me right now.” Servia is driving for the Dreyer & Reinbold/Panther partnership. He’s been in three Indy 500s and finished sixth last year.

“I was a little loose in turn one on the outlap,” the Spaniard said. “Sometimes on the outlap the tires are still not there. My teammate JR (Hildebrand) told us his car was a little loose. We thought we adjusted it out of the car but it wasn’t enough. I really didn’t think it was going to go, but it did.”

Clauson had been strong in practice and had run three laps averaging over 222 mph on his first attempt when his DW12 swapped ends and put him into the Turn One wall.

“It started off as a great run for us,” the Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing driver said. “We were set to land right where we thought we would. I got to Turn One on my final lap and it just came around. We hadn’t had any issues with stability throughout the whole run. If anything, it wasn’t turning well enough. I don’t know exactly what happened but it ended up coming around on us.”

Ryan Briscoe is the pole winner.

Carpenter, Servia and Clauson will be back out there qualifying Sunday and, without much to gain by testing the limit, their teams will probably put a safer aerodynamic setup. That’s the smart thing to do, make sure you don’t hurt the car again.

There’s an expression at Indianapolis that probably has been around since the cars first took to the track in 1909: There are those who have hit the wall at Indy and there are those who will hit the wall at Indy. The cars, tires, engines and men have changed through several generations at Indianapolis, but the desire to be fastest remains the same. And hitting the wall is part of that process.

Lamborghini LP760-2 Aventador by Oakley Design

Comments Off

We have tremendous respect for tuning firms that are able to make a car like the Lamborghini Aventador that much more amazing. Not many have been able to pull it off, but after Oakley Design’s work on the Ferrari 458 Italia, we knew they’d be one of the few to make it happen. To illustrate just how fantastic this package fits with the Aventador, Oakley Design will only be producing five units, and three of them have already been sold.

Focusing on the looks alone, anyone can see the sportier appearance given by the addition of a larger airbox, an intake feed pipe diameter, a titanium exhaust system, and a new set of lighter and wider wheels. Those additions only hint at what’s going on under the hood. Oakley Design worked up the Aventador so that it became 253 lbs lighter than the standard model and, with the help of an ECU remap, 60 HP stronger. The V12 engine now delivers a whopping 760 HP, up from the standard 700 HP. Another impressive feature for this package is that the power will be sent to the rear wheels; no all-wheel drive for this baby. No word yet on how these extra 60 ponies and their delivery will affect the car’s performance, but expect to see a slightly better 0-60 mph time than the 2.9 seconds provided from the factory model.

UPDATE 05/20/2012: Oakley Design has unveiled a new set of images for their LP760-2 package based on the Lamborghini Aventador. The images show the 1st unit of only 5 set to be produced.

3,000 horsepower Ford Mustang Mach 1 shows Veyron what true power is

Comments Off

When the Bugatti Veyron was originally launched packing 987 horsepower and 922lb-ft of torque, the vast majority of the automotive industry was left awestruck over how Bugatti managed to extract that much power and torque from the mammoth W16, quad-turbocharged engine.

However, to tuning firms all across the globe, particularly in Japan, 1,000-odd horsepower means nothing as similar figures can simply be achieved using six-cylinder, or even four-cylinder engines combined with just one of two enormous turbochargers.

In fact, 1,000HP is almost considered nothing these days with various companies including the ever-reclusive Rotary Supercars and TranStar Racing both promising to deliver supercars with upwards of 3,000HP. However, neither of these cars have materialized just yet.

But in what can only be described as an outrageous tuning exercise, Steve Morris Engines recently previewed that extracting three times the power than that of a Veyron isn’t that difficult. They strapped this insane power plant in a relatively stock 1970’s Ford Mustang Mach I body.

In order to achieve these insane results, the firm fitted an incredible 572 cubic inch V8 engine into the car, packing a displacement of 9.4-liters before adding a pair of 88mm billet Bullseye turbochargers. In order to prove that this recipe works very effectively, Steve Morris Engines took the completed engine to the dyno to see what numbers it would deliver.

The results are nothing to sneeze about, as the engine managed to pump out 3,040 raging horses at 7,300rpm while an equally impressive torque figure of 2,411lb-ft was achieved at 6,000rpm. It’s crucial to note at this point however, that these figures are straight from the engine itself, and when all that power is sent through the flywheel and driveshaft, this incredible Mustang may produce around 2,300-2,500 horsepower at the rear wheels.

Unfortunately, this unit has been specifically built for drag racing purposes as evident by the massive parachute hanging off the rear, but that certainly doesn’t detract from what is a mighty impressive feat. And fingers crossed, these results will help encourage other tuning companies to follow suit and continue to push the boundaries of power and torque.

China is becoming a key market for a lot of automotive companies, including Ferrari and, as a thank you gift, the company has opened a new Myth exhibition at the Italian Center in Shanghai Expo Park. The inauguration ceremony was attended by the company’s Deputy Chairman Piero Ferrari, as well as representatives of both the Chinese and Italian governments.

The new exhibition center covers an area of 900 square meters and will be open to the public for three years. Its aim is to introduce the Chinese to Ferrari and allow them to experience the history, cars, technologies, and passion of the Prancing Horse first-hand, thereby further consolidating the already strong links between the Italian marque and this nation.

The models displayed are the 348 TS as the first Ferrari to enter the Chinese mainland market, a 275 GTB4, a 365 GTB4 Daytona, the 750 Monza sports prototype, and the FF.

"For millions of people around the world, Ferrari represents the pinnacle of Italian culture," declared Piero Ferrari. "It is a symbol of passion, success and the constant pursuit of excellence. It has always been our wish to share Ferrari’s unique history and culture with the people of China who have shown great affection for the Prancing Horse and with whom we share core values such as respect for tradition and a tenacious spirit of innovation."

Fiat 500 captured in front of VW HQ

We have seen many automotive pranks in our time, but the following one definitely tops the list for ingenuity, skill, and creativity. It is unlikely to be topped in the near future, just because it is so impressive.

Volkswagen is unquestionably one of the world’s biggest companies with it owning a fairly large selection of other brands including Bugatti, Bentley, Seat, and even Lamborghini, so it obviously takes some creativity to get an upper hand over the competition. Fiat definitely did just that the other day, when they took the opportunity to take advantage of one of the numerous Google Street View vans driving across the globe, and capture something completely unique.

Both Volkswagen and Fiat have headquarters in Sweden and when workers at the Fiat HQ noticed the Google Street View car driving past, they rushed over to their competitor’s major branch in a brand new Fiat 500, 45 minutes away to capture the perfectly executed images you see in the gallery below.

The bright red Fiat 500 can be seen following the Street View car from a distance just seconds away from Volkswagen headquarters before speeding up Volkswagen’s driveway, pulling up in directly below the Volkswagen sign just in time for the images to be captured and then uploaded to Google Street View for the world to see.

And all of this happened in just a matter a seconds without VW having any idea about the stunt, meaning the German marque will have to accept having one of its competitors cars parked outside its showroom for at least a year.

Don’t however, expect VW to take this lightly. We suspect they’re already planning an ingenious way to get back at Fiat.

Bentley reportedly working on custom EXP 9 F to compete at 2013 Dakar Rally

Comments Off

It goes without saying that in its very short life, the Bentley EXP 9 F has already faced its fair share of criticism, largely revolving around its controversial styling. However, Bentley is not going to let the haters get in the way of its ambitious plans for the new SUV and if a report by CAR turns out to be correct, the British marque may enter next year’s Dakar Rally to help drum up support for the SUV and preview its off-road capabilities.

Rather than developing a handful of custom racers from scratch, Bentley is said to be considering purchasing VW Touareg’s from the various private teams which race the cars in the Dakar Rally and converting them into off-road machines which will resemble the concept version of the EXP 9 F, even if they only share minimal components.

Despite a company spokeswoman quickly confirming that no decisions have been made in regards to this possible entry into the world’s most grueling rally event, we won’t let that stop us from reporting on what could be an extraordinary racer if Bentley borrows enough components from the VW Touareg racers. VW’s entry actually won the event in its category in 2009, 2010, and 2011, before the factory team pulled out to instead focus on its upcoming World Rally Championship entry next WRC season.

If Bentley does decide to do what is being reported, they would strip the interior bare and simply fit it with a couple of bucket seats, while also installing the necessary fuel and water storage for the long and hot stages of the Dakar. Next, they would likely ditch the large 6.0-liter W12 engine which the top of the range EXP 9 F SUV is expected to feature and replace it with a lighter, more efficient and less powerful engine similar to 296HP units fitted to the Touareg’s.

Damon Hill returns to Racing – in a VW Scirocco

It’s been 13 years since Ex-Formula One World Champion Damon Hill retired from racing. Tomorrow, though, he returns to the track at Brands Hatch, one the UK’s best race tracks, where he’ll be competing in the Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup race. The eco friendly CNG-powered Sciroccos appear in a support race for the DTM event which is the first ever appearance of DTM cars in the UK.

Hill is racing against his fellow 1980s racing ‘rat pack’ gang Martin Donnelly, Julian Bailey and Perry McCarthy Hill. Mark Blundell and honoree member David Brabham, who fought through the ranks of Formula Ford and Formula 3 at the same time as Hill, are also in the race.

After a practice session Hill said, “It’s wonderful to make my racing comeback here. I love Brands Hatch; I was Champion of Brands in 1983 on bikes, which is one of my proudest achievements! The Volkswagen Scirocco is good fun to drive. And after the first laps I felt the instinct is still the same, but maybe the speed not. Perry, Julian and I are coming out of retirement for this race,” said Damon, “so we are sure to be pretty rusty. But it promises to be a great weekend for all friends and family to get together and a great way to draw attention to the aims and objectives of HALOW charity.”

Damon Hill is the 51-year-old son of Graham Hill who won the Indy 500 in 1966 in a Lola-Ford. Graham Hill was World Champion twice in 1962 and 19868 and has the distinction of being the only driver to win the Triple Crown of Motorsport — the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Indianapolis 500 and Formula One World Championship. Graham was killed in 1975 in a plane crash when Damon was only 15.

Damon did not start racing until he was 21 and went on to have a successful career winning the World Drivers’ Championship in 1996 in a Williams-Renault. Graham and Damon are the only father-son F1 World Champions. Damon’s son, Josh, is now 21 years old and he is currently competing in the British Formula Renault Championship. The dynasty continues.

Rookie Josef Newgarden Has Our Attention – Trackside at Indy 2012

2012 Indy 500

Josef Newgarden has been a revelation in his first week of practice for the Indianapolis 500, posting the fastest lap in three of the six sessions through Thursday. He was out of the top three only one day. It would have been an impressively consistent show of speed for Helio Castroneves, Dario Franchitti or Scott Dixon or any of the veterans, but what do you say about a rookie doing it? Wow. Wow. Wow. IndyCar has a new kid on the block.

Josef Newgarden
Josef Newgarden

Newgarden didn’t come from nowhere, it only seems like it. He was the Firestone Indy Lights champion last season, winning five races including at Indianapolis.

The 21-year-old from Hendersonville, Tenn., earned $1 million from the Mazda Road to Indy to take to an IndyCar team. Newgarden took it to Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing, a small but stout operation that won its first race last season with Ed Carpenter at Kentucky.

Josef Newgarden
Josef Newgarden

Carpenter departed to form his own team and the team lost long-time backer Dollar General. Fisher brought in Wink Hartman, a Kansas oilman, as a partner to help keep the lights on and they went after Newgarden.

Newgarden’s $1 million is attractive, but it’s only about one-sixth of the budget to run a full Izod IndyCar season and that was what they were offering.

Josef Newgarden
Josef Newgarden

“I talked to several teams, but they showed the most interest and really picked me,” Newgarden said.

Newgarden’s background is road racing and his original career path was Formula One. He came out of karting and went through the Skip Barber regional and national series and received the Team USA scholarship run by journalist/broadcaster Jeremy Shaw.

It sent Newgarden to England for the Formula Ford Festival in 2008 and he won the Kent division race. He moved into British Formula Ford the next season and he won nine races and was second in the championship.

Newgarden joined Carlin in 2010 in GP3. He struggled for the first time in his career with four top-10s in 16 races and finished 18th in the championship.  An American finding sponsorship to race in the European development series has always been a challenge and without strong results, it’s virtually impossible. But teams in America hadn’t forgotten about him.

“The best opportunity I had was in Indy Lights,” Newgarden said.

Newgarden tested with Andretti Autosport’s Lights team and signed with Sam Schmidt Motorsports. Schmidt, Newgarden said., took “a leap of faith” and Newgarden repaid him with the team’s fifth Indy Lights championship.

“It was important that I had a good year the next year after GP3,” Newgarden said. “I had a great year and it launched me into IndyCar. I had some options in Europe, but I wanted to stay in America and carry the momentum into IndyCar.”

Newgarden’s results in the four IndyCar races this season aren’t reflective of how well he’s run. His best finish was 11th at the season opener in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Newgarden was fastest on the first, third and fifth days of practice, second fastest on the sixth, third fastest on the sixth and 12th fastest on the fifth. His speeds have ranged from 222.785 miles per hour to 220.650 in the Dallara DW12-Honda and he was third in the combined practices. Newgarden made one mistake, spinning off Turn Four in Wednesday’s fifth session. He made light contact with a front wheel and the DW12 sustained minor damage.

The opening six days were significant in preparation for the May 27, 2012 race because drivers were using the turbo boost level that will be the same in the race. IndyCar raised the boost, adding 40 to 50 more horsepower, for Friday’s practice and the two qualifying days this weekend, to add speed for the single-car, four-lap qualifying attempts. The shock and wing and suspension settings will be different for qualifying.

There is only one day on the track after qualifying, the one hour Carburetion Day practice next Friday. Newgarden still has to prove he can make it 500 miles and manage traffic, tires and multiple pit stops in the race, but he’s got the speed to run and finish at the front.

Chevrolet Camaro SS/RC1

Comments Off

Richard Childress Racing Street Performance partnered with General Motors to create RC1 Camaros to pay homage to legendary racer, Dale Earnhardt. The latest rendition of the RC1 series came just one model year after the Camaro beat all odds and made a successful comeback following its deletion in 2002.

This 2011 Camaro SS/RC1 is based on the 2011 Camaro SS, but features much more than any normal SS on the market. It not only features a stylish design, but it also packs a mean bite under the hood. This particular 2011 Camaro SS/RC1 was not offered to the public, but instead Richard Childress Racing (RCR) built several of the RC1 Camaros and shipped them straight to RK Motors Charlotte.

The RC1 is the first of the series and the least powerful of the three. Of course, being the least powerful of the RC-series is not saying much, as the top-end RC3 pumps out a concrete pummeling 750 horsepower. The best thing is that this special edition Chevy Camaro is in a price range that a working class Joe can actually afford. You may be wondering how much it actually is and what you get for your money.

BMW M5 Hurricane RRS by G-Power

Comments Off

The current BMW M5 F10 already has a G-Power tuned program to its name, one where the German tuner squeezes 640 horsepower out of the German sports car.

But even if the M5 F10 is already out and about, G-Power still did something pretty sensational to the previous generation M5, calling their new program the M5 Hurricane RRS. To give the M5 some added shine, G-Power added a plethora of performance improvement components, including the company’s now famous BI-Kompressor "Sporty Drive" supercharging system. A new coil over suspension was also added, as were a new set of 20" Silverstone Diamond wheels and high-performance brakes. Ceramic brakes are also being offered as an option.

Thanks to its already stout Hurricane power kit, G-Power managed to increase and optimize the engine to a staggering 830 horsepower and 575 lb/ft of torque. Those numbers are good enough to allow this ridiculous M5 to hit 0-62 mph in just 4.3 seconds, 0-124 mph in 9.1 seconds, and 0-186 mph in 25.2 seconds.

And as for top speed? Try an eye-popping 231 mph.

Maserati GranTurismo MC Trofeo 2012-2

This weekend sees many significant auto racing events taking place around the world as the summer racing season gets under way in earnest.

One series that begins this weekend at the Jarama circuit in Spain is the 2012 Maserati Trofeo MC World Series. It’s a series aimed at weekend racers. True. Maserati says “the series appeals to gentleman from all around the world.”

It says it will be even more interesting this time round, thanks to rule changes and new technical regulations that Maserati has introduced. The company says the GranTurismo MC Trofeo now boasts a new, lighter, aerodynamic set-up that improves the car’s performance.

This year the series will include an event in the US at Infineon Raceway on September 23, 2012. The six-race series will also include rounds at Portimao (June 3), Imola (June 24) and Paul Ricard (July 22) and Shanghai ( November 4).

All the cars that compete are prepared by a group of dedicated technicians to ensure that they have the same performance levels. Private teams can enter their own cars in 2010, 2011 or 2012 spec but must meet the homologation rules and technical requirements laid down by Maserati.

Maserati says there will be 25 crews from 12 countries lining up for the first round in Spain. Entrants come from Belgium, Morocco, Spain, Switzerland, Germany, Italy, Monaco, San Marino, Australia, Hungary, the United Arab Emirates and Denmark.

Hopefully by the time the cars are shipped to California for September’s race there will be at least one ‘gentleman’ from the U.S. participating.

P4/5 Competizione becomes the fastest Ferrari ever to lap Nurburgring

James Glickenhaus’ Ferrari P4/5 Competizione just proved one more time has just proven yet again what a fantastic machine it is. According to Jalopnik, during the 24 Hours of Nürburgring qualifying round, the supercar lapped the famous Nurburgring in just 6:51. This makes it the fastest Ferrari ever around the Nurburgring, smashing the previous record of 6:58.16 held by the Ferrari 599XX. All Glickenhaus had to say about this impressive result was: "I think it’s pretty cool!" However, he did invite Ferrari to come and challenge their supercar.

As most people already know, the Ferrari P4/5 Competizione was built on a Ferrari 430 Scuderia and, for this year’s 24 hours of Nürburgring, combined a hybrid drive system with a 4.0L V8 engine. This new hybrid system is very similar to the KERS system used in Formula 1 cars and added an extra 80 HP to the car’s total output, leaving it with an impressive 563 HP.

Audi S5 Coupe by Eibach

When Audi’s 2012 lineup was revealed, there were very little changes made to the car’s overall look. Aside from a few tweaks here and there, Audi’s main concern for the new model year S5 was the downsizing of the engine, from an eight cylinder to a 333 HP 3.0-liter V6 TFSI powerplant that produces less horsepower than its predecessor. German tuner, Eibach, didn’t have a problem with that as the V6 provided equal performance numbers to the 2011 model while also improving the car’s efficiency rating. What they did have a problem with, however, was the car’s handling, so they decided to generate more power with an optimum suspension set-up themed "Inspired by motorsport – Performance for the road."

This new suspension system is composed of Pro-Kit Performance Springs and specially adapted mono-tube gas pressure shock absorbers from Bilstein. The best part of this new system is that it offers a slightly lowered center of gravity that makes the car look even more like the Audi A5 DTM version.

The "Inspired by motorsport – Performance for the road" theme is extended to the exterior of the vehicle with a cool white finish combined with red graphics. Eibach also provided three different wheel options: Show & Shine for representative purposes, Performance for everyday use, and High Performance for the racetrack.
